Integrated Arts Specialist
Young people learn through the arts. History, math, reading, geography and other academic subjects can be taught and reinforced through music and the arts. Devonna Rowe has designed arts education programs for many years. She holds a teaching certification with the Maryland State Department of Education. As a singer she has worked as an Arts Educator to develop programs with Mitchell Korn, from Harvard University. Mr. Korn is one of the world's leaders in Arts Education. She has worked as a consultant and workshop leader for teachers in the Education Department at the Kennedy Center. As a performing artist, Devonna has received grants for her work in Arts Education from local, state and national arts organizations.

The Master Class Series (Grades 11-12 and Adult Audiences):
Poetry in Song: Poetry and African American Composers of Art Songs and Spirituals
The role of the words within the song will be highlighted in this presentation. The lives of the composers and poets
whose words they set to music as well as the history surrounding the each song will also be explored.
A Musical Portrait: Art Songs, Opera and Musical Theater
The style, language and history behind the songs are key factors in this presentation. Students will visualize and hear a
musical collage upon a tapestry of words and color.
Around The World with Music and Motion (Grades k-2)
All Aboard! The train is about to the leave the station. Students board an imaginary train and travel to Russia, Italy, Germany, France and Africa learning about each culture through the music, songs and dances of the land.
The Folk Music of African Americans (Grades 1-12 with modifications). Also available as a virtual presentation online.
The lives and music of the African People are highlighted in this presentation. History comes to life as the students take part in this musical drama.
This Little Light of Mine (Grades 6-12)
Five African American Women who were trail - blazers in the area of concert music are portrayed.
These singers were legends in their own time. Students will step into history during this program.
Opera: Look, Listen and Learn (Grades 1-5) Also available as a virtual presentation online
Students learn about opera through performance and audio visual sources. The history, style and
people who were instrumental in the development of the genre will be highlight. Students will participate
in the art form through deductive reasoning and musical activities.
Workshops
Vocal Works (Grades 6-12). Also available as a virtual presentation online.
Students explore breathing, posture and vocal technique to sing. The body as an instrument is emphasized.
Opera Imitates Life (Grades 6-12)
While learning facts about Opera students compare historical events with their lives.
Songs of Africa (Grades 1-5) Also Available as a virtual presentation online.
The Game Songs, Story Songs, and Recreational Songs of Ghana and Zimbabwe
are explored as students take part in the music, songs and games of Africa.
Residencies
Reading is Music to My Ears
Students in grades 1-5 strengthen reading and language arts skills through music and integrated arts activities. Content Skills and Standards set by the Department of Education are used as a guide for this program.

Students go beyond the classroom as they develop technical skills and increase their knowledge of vocal music. Classical,
Broadway, Folk and Patriotic Songs are explored as students gain an awareness of themselves through breathing, posture and diction.
